Kenneth I. Wolpin: Empirical Methods for the Study of Labour Force Dynamics

Empirical Methods for the Study of Labour Force Dynamics

Description

In the last twenty years there has been an explosion of economic research on labor force dynamics; the movement of individuals between labor force states. This book focuses on the methods by which behavioral theories of labor force dynamics have been empirically implemented. Most attention is paid to the partial equilibrium two-state transitional model of job search behavior. That model is the foundation for much of our thinking about the nature of unemployment at both the individual and aggregate levels. Although the basic formulation has remained the same, approaches to the empirical implementation of such models has changed dramatically.

In "Old World Witchcraft," noted author Raven Grimassi covers totally new territory--in his work and in the world of popular witchcraft books published in the last few decades. This book is actually about "an enchanted worldview," one that has not necessarily been inherited from the beliefs and practices of any particular region and one which is available to us today. The "Old World" in the title is actually about a magical view of the Plant Kingdom and the spirits attached to it. While Grimassi's previous books discuss the cultural expressions and The Sami People : Traditions in Transitions free pdf commonality of witchcraft beliefs and practices in general, this book penetrates much deeper. "Old World Witchdraft" reveals rarely discussed topics such as the concept of Shadow as the organic memory of the earth. Readers will learn rooted techniques that possess power because these ways have always been connected to it. They will learn methods of interfacing with the ancestral current and with the organic memory of the earth. Through these they can connect with the timeless arts and learn methods of empowerment directly from the ancient source.Totally new information about familiar tools is presented. For example, the mortar and pestle is a tool for spell casting, a device that creates interfacing with plant spirits and with shadow, and a focal point for veneration of the Plant Kingdom. Grimassi also presents the art of using plant ashes for magical sigil work. This book is for people who have had their fill of books that say the same things over and over, who want to take the next step, and who are eager for the more rooted ways that have remained largely hidden.

The Sami People : Traditions in Transitions

Description

Sami culture has undergone powerful changes recently. Traditions have been integrated with contemporary influences and perspectives. New kinds of Sami participation and activism have evolved including innovative politics, informative media, expressive art and literature.Accommodating internal and external changes is nothing novel to the Sami. The dialogue between what is traditional and what is modern is a natural part of their development towards the maintenance of Sami cultural distinctness."

Richard Maxwell Eaton: The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier, 1204-1760

The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier, 1204-1760

Description

In all of the South Asian subcontinent, Bengal was the region most receptive to the Islamic faith. This area today is home to the world's second-largest Muslim ethnic population. How and why did such a large Muslim population emerge there? And how does such a religious conversion take place? Richard Eaton uses archaeological evidence, monuments, narrative histories, poetry, and Mughal administrative documents to trace the long historical encounter between Islamic and Indic civilizations. Moving from the year 1204, when Persianized Turks from North India annexed the former Hindu states of the lower Ganges delta, to 1760, when the British East India Company rose to political dominance there, Eaton explores these moving frontiers, focusing especially on agrarian growth and religious change.

In her sensitive book for parents, Jane Bennett dispels the notion of the curse, replacing it with a positive and enlightened view of menarche and menstruation. With practical advice on how to explain menstruation to your daughter, help her cope with mood swings and pain, as well as handle such issues as contraception, you can feel confident that your daughter will have an affirming experience of menstruation. Have you collected all 24 graphic novel adventures? Tintin in the Land of the Soviets; Tintin in the Congo; Tintin in America; Tintin: Cigars of the Pharaoh; Tintin: The Blue Lotus; Tintin: The Broken Ear; Tintin: The Black Island; Tintin: King Ottakar's Sceptre; Tintin: The Crab with the Golden Claws; Tintin: The Shooting Star; Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn; Tintin: Red Rackham's Treasure; Tintin: The Seven Crystal Balls; Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun; The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier, 1204-1760 download book Tintin: Land of Black Gold; Tintin: Destination Moon; Tintin: Explorers of the Moon; Tintin: The Calculus Affair; Tintin: The Red Sea Sharks; Tintin in Tibet; Tintin: The Castafiore Emerald; Tintin: Flight 714 to Sydney; The Adventures of Tintin and the Picaros; and, Tintin and Alph-Art.

Codes: An Introduction to Information Communication and Cryptography

Description

Many people do not realise that mathematics provides the foundation for the devices we use to handle information in the modern world. Most of those who do know probably think that the parts of mathematics involvedare quite `cl- sical', such as Fourier analysis and di?erential equations. In fact, a great deal of the mathematical background is part of what used to be called `pure' ma- ematics, indicating that it was created in order to deal with problems that originated within mathematics itself. It has taken many years for mathema- cians to come to terms with this situation, and some of them are still not entirely happy about it. Thisbookisanintegratedintroductionto Coding.Bythis Imeanreplacing symbolic information, such as a sequence of bits or a message written in a naturallanguage, byanother messageusing (possibly) di?erentsymbols. There are three main reasons for doing this: Economy (data compression), Reliability (correction of errors), and Security (cryptography). I have tried to cover each of these three areas in su?cient depth so that the reader can grasp the basic problems and go on to more advanced study. The mathematical theory is introduced in a way that enables the basic problems to bestatedcarefully, butwithoutunnecessaryabstraction.Theprerequisites(sets andfunctions, matrices,?niteprobability)shouldbefamiliartoanyonewhohas taken a standard course in mathematical methods or discrete mathematics. A course in elementary abstract algebra and/or number theory would be helpful, but the book contains the essential facts, and readers without this background should be able to understand what is going on. vi Thereareafewplaceswherereferenceismadetocomputeralgebrasystems.

RMS Queen Mary : Transatlantic Masterpiece

Description

No other moving object has carried as many people in one voyage (over 16,000). After the war, she became the most profitable vessel in the Cunard fleet and the 1950s were a golden era for ocean liner travel. By the 1960s, jets had taken much of the traffic and after 1,001 voyages, the mighty Queen was sold for preservation at Long Beach, where she resides today, the last remaining great ocean liner.

Heinz Knocke: I Flew for the Fuhrer

I Flew for the Fuhrer

Description

Heinz Knoke was one of the outstanding German fighter pilots of World War II and this vivid first-hand record of his experiences has become a classic among aviation memoirs, a best-selling counter-balance to the numerous accounts written by Allied pilots.Knoke joined the Luftwaffe on the outbreak of war, and eventually became commanding officer of a fighter wing. An outstandingly brave and skilful fighter, he logged over two thousand flights, and shot down fifty-two enemy aircraft. He had flown over four hundred operational missions before being crippled by wounds in an astonishing 'last stand' towards the end of the war. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for his achievements. In a text that reveals his intense patriotism and discipline, he describes being brought up in the strict Prussian tradition, the impact of the coming of the Nazi regime, and his own wartime career set against a fascinating study of everyday life in the Luftwaffe, and of the high morale of the force until its disintegration. In a postscript provided for this edition, Heinz Knoke writes of the struggle to survive after the war in Germany, and his building of a new life. Now that the Berlin Wall has been torn down, his memoirs are set in a new perspective, both a valuable contribution to aviation literature and a moving human story.

Dedicated to ensuring that you get the most out of every glass, Jancis RobinsonGCOs Wine Course explains how to taste and store wine, what to serve on special occasions at home, and how to order the best value from a restaurant wine list. Full of infectious enthusiasm and heaps of personal tips, this book will soon have you reaching for the corkscrew. Family estrangement is larger than conflict and more complicated than betrayal. It is entwined in contradictory beliefs, values, behaviours and goals and is the result of at least one member of the family considering reconciliation impossible and/or undesirable. The cessation of familial relations, whether that involves rejection or deciding to leave, can be an inordinately traumatising experience. Whilst data suggests that around 1 in 12 people are estranged from at least one family member this topic is rarely discussed or researched. Based on the author's in-depth research and exploration of the topic of estrangement, Family Estrangement: A Matter I Flew for the Fuhrer download ebook of Perspective captures the unique lived experiences of both estrangee and estranger. Offering multiple perspectives drawn from academic and popular literature as well as case studies, the book contextualises its chapters within current theoretical understandings of family relationships and estrangement, including Loss and Grief theories, Attachment Theory and Bowen Family Systems Theory.

R.G. LeTourneau Heavy Equipment: The Mechanical Drive Era 1921-1953

Description

In the history of heavy equipment development, no single man s name is more respected or revered as that of R. G. LeTourneau. Robert Gilmour LeTourneau is considered by many to be the dean of high-speed mobile earthmoving equipment. His designs of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s laid the fundamental groundwork for many of the earthmoving machines we see on a daily basis. Self-propelled, rubber tired scrapers, bulldozing blades, and rippers were all conceived under his engineering genius in the quest for moving material at the lowest-cost-per-yard. The time period of 1921 to 1953 saw many of R. G. LeTourneau s most important heavy-equipment introductions, such as the Carryall and the Tournapull, and the initial development of the electric drive wheel. This first volume of fantastic machine creations covers the early years up until the sale of the company to Westinghouse in 1953. Standard production, specials, and experimental machines in rare archival images, some in print for the very first time, help showcase what made R. G. LeTourneau so important in the heavy equipment industry."

Danilo Kis,Michael Henry Heim: Encyclopaedia of the Dead

Encyclopaedia of the Dead

Description

Continuing the European Classics series, here is the first paperback edition of ". . . one of the finest fantastic collections since Borge's FICCIONES" (THE NATION). In these stories Danilo Kis depicts human relationships, encounters, landscapes--the multitude of details that make up a human life. "Remarkable . . . . A shadow of death darkens this book, but it is a beautiful shadow and a luminescent darkness".--THE NEW REPUBLIC.

Abby Cooper's betting the house on her inner eye... A flawless compendium of flaws. Alice Roberts, PhD, anatomist, writer, and presenter of "The Incredible Human Journey"The antidote to fuzzy thinking, with furry Encyclopaedia of the Dead download ebook animals!Have you read (or stumbled into) one too many irrational online debates? Ali Almossawi certainly had, so he wrote "An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments"! This handy guide is here to bring the internet age a much-needed dose of old-school logic (really old-school, "a la" Aristotle). Here are cogent explanations of the "straw man" fallacy, the "slippery slope" argument, the "ad hominem" attack, and other common attempts at reasoning that actually fall short plus a beautifully drawn menagerie of animals who (adorably) commit every logical "faux pas." Rabbit thinks a strange light in the sky "must" be a UFO because no one can prove otherwise ("the appeal to ignorance"). And Lion doesn t believe that gas emissions harm the planet because, if that "were" true, he wouldn t like the result (the "argument from consequences").Once you learn to recognize these abuses of reason, they start to crop up everywhere from congressional debate to YouTube comments which makes this geek-chic book a "must" for anyone in the habit of holding opinions."

Greg Gilbert,D. A. Carson: What is the Gospel?

What is the Gospel?

Description

What is the gospel? It seems like a simple question, yet it has been known to incite some heated responses, even in the church. How are we to formulate a clear, biblical understanding of the gospel? Tradition, reason, and experience all leave us ultimately disappointed. If we want answers, we must turn to the Word of God. Greg Gilbert does so in What Is the Gospel? Beginning with Paul's systematic presentation of the gospel in Romans and moving through the sermons in Acts, Gilbert argues that the central structure of the gospel consists of four main subjects: God, man, Christ, and a response. The book carefully examines each and then explores the effects the gospel can have in individuals, churches, and the world. Both Christian and non-Christian readers will gain a clearer understanding of the gospel in this valuable resource.

'One could not ask for a more meticulous or scholarly assessment of what Britain meant to the Romans, or Rome to Britons, than Peter Salway's Monumental Study' Frederick Raphael, Sunday Times From the invasions of Julius Caesar to the unexpected end of Roman rule in the What is the Gospel? download epub early fifth century AD and the subsequent collapse of society in Britain, this book is the most authoritative and comprehensive account of Roman Britain ever published for the general reader. Peter Salway's narrative takes into account the latest research including exciting discoveries of recent years, and will be welcomed by anyone interested in Roman Britain. George hated his grandmother. She was a selfish, nasty, grumpy old woman. Was she a witch? Then, one day, George has a marvellous idea. He makes Grandma a magic medicine from all the runny, powdery and gooey things in the house. "Perhaps she'll become a better person, or her head will explode!" he thought. Open your mouth wide Grandma, you are going to have a nasty surprise!

Thomas M. Disch: The Dreams Our Stuff is Made of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World

The Dreams Our Stuff is Made of: How Science Fiction Conquered the World

Description

Disch traces Sci-Fi's phenomenal growth from the supernatural tales of Edgar Allen Poe to the utopian dreams and technological nightmares of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, to today when it has become a multi-billion dollar global entertainment industry. While he highlights the genre's predictive successes, he emphasises its cultural role as both a lens and a medium for the very rapid changes driven by modern technology. Disch traces sci-fi's role in all aspects of modern life and explains how it has become a cultural battlefield even helping us to adjust to new social realities. But Disch is also highly critical of the genre and sees its darker expression in the appearance of suicidal UFO cults. Behind the spaceships and aliens, Disch reveals the blueprints of the dizzying postmodern future we have already begun to inhabit.
